As a person with diabetes, I’m well aware of the things I eat and how this effects my blood glucose level. It’s hard to constantly analyze my food and thinking about the effect it will have on my body. Especially when I am at a party or at any social occasion. I just want to have a good time and enjoy myself. And some people with diabetes would like to enjoy a nice glass of wine or a beer from time to time. However, many question what the effect of alcohol is on their body and whether they should drink at all.
Drinking alcohol has an effect on everyone, whether your are perfectly healthy or not. When you drink alcohol, this quickly finds its way into your bloodstream. For people with diabetes, drinking alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise. For people who use insulin or a certain medication, drinking alcohol can cause a strong decrease in their blood level. This can be dangerous because the liver has to work to remove the alcohol from the blood instead of regulating the blood sugar. Surely, an occasional drink is OK but make sure you don’t overdo it. Stick to 1 or 2 glasses. Also, don’t drink on an empty stomach and drink slowly. It’s better to avoid sweet cocktail mixes and sweet wines. Monitor your blood sugar before and after you had a drink, just to be sure. If you have any doubts, you can always seek advice from your doctor.
I stick to these guidelines and meanwhile, enjoy the parties I’m going to. And so could you!
